I think I first started wearing a watch when I was in junior high. Whenever it was, it didn't take long for me to become addicted to having that little time piece on my wrist. I've been wearing watches all the time ever since. Even around the house. Even during summer vacation. I like knowing what time it is. I feel naked without one. I've always been diligent about keeping them all running. I replace the batteries when they run down. I purchase new bands when the old ones wear out. I welcome new ones into my collection and I wear them all. Or at least I used to.
A funny thing happened when I closed the shop and started working here at home. First I noticed there were days when I didn't even think about putting on a watch unless I was getting ready to leave the house. Then I started noticing that I would actually get out of the house without a watch on my wrist. If I hadn't left my street yet when I noticed it I would come back home to get one. Then I quit bothering to come back. Finally, one day I noticed that every watch on my dresser had a dead battery and I couldn't remember the last time I had worn one of them. That was several months ago. I don't miss them. Not at all. I never catch myself looking at my wrist to see what time it is. How did this happen?
My father instilled in me at a very young age the habit of always counting my cash before walking away from the bank teller's window or driving away from the drive-thru. You never know when a mistake will be made and once you've left, you're screwed. Today that habit paid off. When the container came back to my car and I opened it up there was my deposit receipt, but no cash! I pointed out the error to my teller and she promptly corrected the situation. Man, would I have been unhappy if I'd driven off and then discovered I didn't have my $100!
For those of you in the Northern Hemisphere, spring is upon us. How does your life change as the weather gets warmer?
As the sun sets later I find myself staying up later. I'm just not a night person. In the winter I find myself ready to crawl into bed right after supper. I'm not sleepy then. I'll read or watch TV, whatever. But I'm ready to go to bed when it gets dark out. Needless to say my winter evenings are decidedly unproductive. As the sun sets later I start doing more things in the evenings. By the time summer arrives I can completely lose track of the time and stay up working very late into the evening. Not sure how much of this behavior is just me and how much of it is a reflection of all those years when I had to get up early for school during the winter and had summers off (we're talking about 30 of the 49 years I've been around). Either way it's a habit that's not likely to change any time soon.
