A recent study has indicated that fabric gives off certain Pheromones, that actually hypnotize women and cause them to purchase ungodly amounts. When stored in large quantities in enclosed spaces, the Pheromones (in the fabric) cause memory loss and induce the nesting syndrome therefore perpetuating the species (aka fabricus maximus). Sound tests have also revealed that these fabrics emit a very high-pitched sound, heard only by a select few breed of women known as quilters. When played backwards on an LP, the sounds are heard as chants "Buy Me" "Cut Me" "Sew Me"! Studies have also indicated that aliens have inhabited the earthfabric store clerks. It's also been my experience that these same Pheromones cause a pathological need to hide the fabrics away when taken home (or at least blended into the existing stash) and when asked by a significant other if the fabric is new, the reply is "I've had it for awhile".

Well, John certainly appears to have had lots of fun spending my money for me while he was on vacation. This is nearly 3 times the amount of fabric he picked up for me two years ago. Guess he's feeling a bit more confident in his buying abilities (as well he should).

There's a nice pile of cottons that I can incorporate into lots of projects.

The one on the left is a woven design in red, black, and gold. The four on the right are printed.

These silks are the ones that have already been assigned to a particular project. The three on the left are solid colors; (from top to bottom) navy blue, yellow, and dark green. The three on the right are shot silks; (from top to bottom) light green and magenta, light green and purple, pumpkin and white.

"What will I be doing with them?" you ask. Well, about a year and a half ago I purchased a queen size silk quilt batting at a quilt show. This little puppy cost me nearly $100 and I have every intention of hand quilting it--something to really show off what I can do. I was thinking of something very simple such as a whole cloth or an Amish style such as a center diamond or bars. Since silk fabric is so expensive here in the states I had resigned myself to using cotton sateen fabric instead. Now I don't have to! I still don't know exactly what this quilt will look like (I may even do several small quilts instead of one large one) or when I will have time to do it. If I'm smart I'll get it done while I'm still young and my hands are in good shape.

Edit: I just got a better look at those three "solid" silks in good light. The green one really is solid, but the navy blue one is shot blue and black, the yellow is shot yellow and white!

Yesterday while teaching a class at Sooner Quilts I finished up a quilt top I was making for this summer's shop hop.

The pattern we chose is called "Cheese & Crackers". It's a very quick and easy quilt to put together. The background fabric is one of the two fabrics that were specially printed up for this year's hop. The rest of the quilt features a variety of bright batiks.

2008 shop hop fabric

This is a batik that was specially designed for the shop hop by Hoffman Fabrics. The only difference in the other fabric is that the flowers are larger. (This piece has flowers about 1 1/2" in diameter, the other piece is about 3 1/2".)

The shop hop web site should be updated around May 1 to reflect this year's fabric and the finishing kits that will be available from the various shops. In addition to those items Michelle will be offering this kit for sale (in a variety of sizes). Advance orders can be placed, but it will not ship until the end of June.

This will be my first year to attend our hop as a customer. I can't wait!
