Progress Report
Last weekend when I mentioned that I would be doing some work on a commissioned quilt Jean asked if I would be posting pictures. It'll be a while before it's done, but here's what I have so far.
It's going to be a queen size quilt with 7 rings across and 8 rings down. This quilt is to be given as a 50th anniversary gift by the anniversary couple's children. The colors of the rings (mint green and light purple) were the colors of their wedding. [1] I chose gold for the corners because it's a 50th anniversary. Seven of the large white sections will contain photos. One of the couple (I haven't received the pictures yet, but I think it will be a wedding photo if possible) and the other six photos will be of their children and families (for those who have families of their own).
So far I have encountered no problems with the construction. I chose to purchase the Marti Michell template set and the pieces are going together perfectly! I'll post more pictures when I have something new to show.
[1] I had no actual samples of anything from the wedding to get the colors right so I had to guess.
Comments
I love the fabric choices in this quilt. the movement is incredible. I also like the symbolism of gold.
I would NEVER have the patience to do this...but it makes me want to!
PS: Thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving your comments :-)
I'm a firm believer in the rotary cutter and templates as well as cutting multiple layers of fabric at one time. The 1778 pieces I have sewn together so far took a little less than 4 1/2 hours to cut and about 12 hours to sew.
It's all machine pieced and will be machine quilted (I have a long arm quilting machine).
1) Sewing machines don't like me. I managed to put a machine needle through the middle finger of my right hand when I was five, and I've never used one since!
2) I lack the room in my tiny flat to be able to set up a space where I could work.
You're certainly right about hand piecing taking time. At the moment, I'm working on a medallion quilt for myself using Wuthering Heights by Moda, whilst also helping my mother make some Jacob's Ladder blocks for a quilt that she's working on. Since I've started a new job, I'm lucky if I can get one block done every two days. As for my quilt? Forget it, LOL!
I'd love to see pictures of your medallion quilt. I love that design format and Wuthering Heights is a great fabric line. Moda fabrics are hugely popular in my area. Not just because they're beautiful, but because their offices are just a couple of hundred miles south of here in Dallas, Texas. Until the recent run up in gas prices it was almost cheaper for a shop owner to drive down to their warehouse to buy fabric and haul it home themselves than it was to order it and have it shipped!
